PEARS

PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY ASSESSMENT, RECOGNITION, AND STABILIZATION

Taking a PEARS Class

You can’t plan for a pediatric emergency. Medical professionals must act quickly to assist any of the children in your vicinity if they collapse or stop breathing. When accidents happen — and they do happen — you want to be ready. Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) is training and certification program that gives non-healthcare hospital employees the skills and knowledge they need to provide first-response assistance in the event of a pediatric emergency. If you work in a healthcare facility, obtaining your PEARS certification is vital. Here at Heart Life CPR, we are proud to offer a single-day, 6-hour PEARS certification course to groups and individuals in the Tri-State area of: Connecticut, Rhode Island & Massachusetts. Learn more about PEARS training below, and enroll with our award-winning team today!

Heart Life CPR is known throughout the Tri-State area of: Connecticut, Rhode Island & Massachusetts as a leading provider of CPR and first aid training classes. But we offer much more than just courses in basic lifesaving skills. If your work requires more advance training that includes needing to attend a PEARS training class in order to obtain your PEARS certification, Heart Life CPR has the right PEARS class for you.

What You Learn

PEARS stands for Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization. Earning a PEARS certification helps healthcare providers develop the knowledge and skills needed for emergency evaluation and treatment of seriously ill infants and children.

Specifically, PEARS certification teaches first responders and first aid providers how to recognize medical emergencies such as respiratory distress, shock and cardiac arrest, and provide appropriate lifesaving interventions until the child can be transported to an advanced life support provider. The goal of PEARS is to improve the quality of initial care provided to seriously ill or injured children in order to produce better medical outcomes.

Our Heart Life CPR - PEARS class teaches a systematic approach to basic pediatric assessment. You’ll learn how to assess a child’s condition in various medical emergencies and what first aid to apply. This includes:

  • Respiratory compromise and arrest recognition and management

  • Circulatory compromise and arrest recognition and management

  • Shock recognition and management

  • Pediatric chain of survival

The course also provides a basic life support (BLS) review, as well as several pediatric case studies and simulations to help you gain confidence in responding to medical emergencies involving children.

The Heart Life CPR PEARS course is recommended for all healthcare professionals – including EMTs, medical and surgical nurses, school nurses, and other medical personnel – who need to know how to recognize and manage pediatric emergencies.

However, it is important to note that our PEARS course is not the same as our PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) class. In the PEARS class, students will practice being a team member during treatment of sick or injured pediatric patients. They will not be required to lead a code, just be able to participate in the different team member roles. In PALS, students are instructed in team leadership, including knowing what course of action to take and how to direct the team. PALS students are tested in team leadership. In order to be credentialed for advanced pediatric skills, students must take our PALS class. In addition, you don’t need to take both the PEARS and PALS class, they cover similar material. Typically, your job will tell you which one is required for your job.

Classroom

In Person: Delivered in a traditional classroom setting conveniently located at our office in Downtown Norwich, CT. Our in-person PEARS courses combine lecture with hands-on skills sessions. The course culminates with testing, which allows participants to receive a two-year certification.
