Responding to Emergencies
Taking a Responding to Emergencies Class
The Responding to Emergencies (RTE) program is Heart Life CPR's semester-long lay responder program designed to help participants recognize and respond to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.
This program is designed primarily for use in secondary schools, colleges, universities and other settings that require a curriculum of greater length than Heart Life CPR's traditional First Aid/CPR/AED program. With the additional course length, RTE provides more in-depth lecture and discussion content as well as extended time for skill activities such as giving CPR and using an AED.
What You Learn
When you understand First Aid and how CPR and AED can be used simultaneously, you'll gain the ability to help those in need. Through our Responding to Emergencies certification classes you'll learn how to respond to specific situations, which will help you care for people in crisis as they wait for medical professionals to arrive. This gives them the best opportunity for a positive outcome – and gives you the opportunity to change someone's life for the better.
What We Cover
Designed to help non-medical professionals provide assistance in times of crisis, our courses allow you to gain an understanding of First Aid/CPR/AED best practices for a wide range of conditions, including:
How to Administer Adult, Child and Infant CPR: Learn how to provide CPR to individuals of all ages.
How to Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Special Considerations: Learn about AEDs, how they work, where to locate them and how to use them during critical situations.
How to Assist Conscious and Unconscious Choking Victims: Learn how to identify and support choking victims until advanced medical personnel arrive on scene.
And how to care for conditions such as:
Neck, head and spinal injuries

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES CERTIFICATION
CPR helps save lives, and those who become CPR-certified may prove to be the difference between life or death. Additionally AED devices help save lives, and those who become AED-certified may prove to be the difference between life or death.
If a person suffers sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), the heart suddenly stops beating. When this happens, blood no longer flows to the brain and other essential organs. And if SCA goes unaddressed, a victim may die within minutes.
Ultimately, CPR empowers individuals of all ages and skill levels to become life-savers. Responding to Emergencies training teaches men, women and children how to provide life-saving support in SCA emergencies and other life-threatening situations. That way, Responding to Emergencies certified individuals possess the skills and confidence they need to administer critical assistance in a wide range of emergencies.
